The 6th graders from Saint Martin de Porres Academy just returned from spending a whole week at a dairy farm in Reading, VT.
The students worked hard all week on the farm, and learned all about where their food comes from and the importance of sustainable farming practices. The ‘Farms for City Kids’ program focuses on teaching students from urban areas the entire life cycle of food that eventually ends up on their tables. 6th grader Alan Lopez said, “I was surprised to see where all of our food comes from and how much work goes into every single thing we eat!”
Students milked and cared for the dairy cows, fed chickens and ducks, harvested apples and made cider, learned about composting, and helped out in the cheese room where the farm turns the raw milk from the cows into all kinds of tasty cheese.
A huge thanks to the ‘Farms for City Kids’ program (http://farmsforcitykids.org/) for making the week such a fantastic opportunity to learn in the great outdoors!
