We love our volunteers! That is why we are thrilled to have nominated Carol Cangiano, Ed Fletcher, and Dawn Callahan to receive the St. John Neumann Award from the Archdiocese of Hartford. They received their awards at the 46th Anniversary HOPES Dinner on Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at the Aqua Turf in Plantsville.

St. John Neumann, the Bishop of Philadelphia and the first man from the United States to become a saint, was a leader in Catholic Education and a spirited defender of the poor. The St. John Neumann Award is given to volunteers in recognition of outstanding service to Catholic education and who demonstrate unwavering commitment to their schools.
Dawn Callahan, and husband and wife team Carol Cangiano and Ed Fletcher, have been dedicated supporters and volunteers with Saint Martin de Porres Academy for many years. From helping the Golf-Fore-Kids Scholarship Tournament go off without a hitch to making the Spring Fling Gala a success, these individuals have been exemplars of service to our students and invaluable in helping to make SMPA’s mission possible.
Dawn Callahan, a branch manager at Guilford Savings Bank, began working with SMPA as an event volunteer through her job, who encourages their employees to be active participants in the communities they serve. Dawn and the Guilford Savings Bank team show up to every SMPA event ready to seamlessly run check in and check out, with a warm smile and positive attitude. Dawn continuously goes above and beyond for SMPA, extending her personal time to volunteer whenever SMPA needs her as well. She spreads great care and attention in everything she does. We rest easy knowing that our events and our guests are in good hands when Dawn is part of the team.
Carol Cangiano and Ed Fletcher who are Realtors with Coldwell Banker Realty, have continuously shown up for SMPA to support our events and our students. They too, are ready to answer the call whenever SMPA needs a helping hand. Carol and Ed give their time and energy to volunteer at our Golf-Fore-Kids Tournament each year and have volunteered for our Spring Fling Gala, which Carol once co-chaired as well. They give of their time, talent and treasure, having generously provided each one of our middle school students with fleece jackets for the winter, and personally made sure that each student who attended the trip to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center to view the Artemis rocket launch in November of 2022 was able to purchase of a souvenir from the gift shop to remember this once in a lifetime trip. We are so very grateful for Carol and Ed’s unwavering support, generosity, and friendship.
Congratulations to Carol, Ed and Dawn on this well-deserved award. We are so grateful to have the opportunity to recognize these three valued members of our SMPA family.
