SMPA graduate Mohamed, Class of 2025, was awarded the 2019 Benjamin Surowiecki First Tee Scholarship presented annually at Saint Martin de Porres Academy’s Golf-Fore-Kids Scholarship Tournament.
While at SMPA, Mohamed played the trombone, participated in Arts & Crafts, Chess Club, Fix-it Club and was on the Basketball and Soccer teams. Mohamed especially enjoyed going on school trips. One of his favorite memories is his 6th grade class trip to Farms for City Kids where he learned to milk a cow while spending the week on a working dairy farm.
Mohamed’s polite, soft-spoken and hard-working nature has earned him the respect of teachers and peers alike. He is kind and supportive, academically gifted and an outstanding example of an enthusiastic, determined student.
He attends Hamden Hall Country Day School where he participates in Chess Club, Investment Club, The Biology Olympiad and Varsity Soccer and Basketball.
Outside of school Mohamed enjoys being a caddy at the New Haven Country Club. He is working toward becoming an Evan’s Scholar one day – a full-tuition scholarship program for students who are golf caddies and excel in academics.
Mohamed plans to study dentistry in college and says he “looks forward to the day he can give back to Saint Martin’s.”
About the Ben Surowiecki First Tee Scholarship
Ben Surowiecki was the husband of Saint Martin de Porres Academy’s founding Academic Principal, Mary Surowiecki. Ben spent innumerable hours helping to prepare the school to open in 2005. An exceptional golfer, Ben recognized that many important moments in business happen on the golf course. He wanted our students to be comfortable and skilled in these important situations and was instrumental in launching First Tee Golf Program at SMPA. In his humble, quiet, and caring way, Ben’s passion for golf has impacted many of our students.
In his honor, Mary and their three sons established the Ben Surowiecki First Tee Scholarship Fund to provide high school tuition assistance to SMPA students who have been involved in the First Tee Program.
