Extended Day and Year
In order to provide the necessary support and structure for our students, our school model is: small class size, a 10-hour extended school day, an 11-month extended school year, 90 minutes of reading per day, 2 meals a day and mandatory parental commitment. Our students are in school approximately 850 more hours per year than their public school peers and our attendance is 97%.
Each student attends six 50-minute classes daily. Reading, writing, math, social studies and religion meet five times weekly; all other classes meet between three and four times weekly. Fifth and sixth graders have more time devoted to math and reading, allowing students time to devote to these subjects and teachers’ time to work individually with students. Other subjects include art, music, and a foreign language. Each student is required to participate in cultural enrichment activities, an extended day and an extended year program. These programs reinforce the academic experience and foster the development of the whole person.
Our curriculum is tailored to meet the learning needs of each student. Students receive one-on-one tutoring on an as needed basis from volunteer tutors. A social worker provides counseling to help foster each student’s emotional well-being. |
