St. Martin de Porres Academy Library Media Center
Mission Statement
The SMPA Library Media Center is committed to maintaining a 21st century learning environment. The Library Media Center program will provide resources that will assist students and staff in becoming lifelong learners and in fostering a love of reading. The library program will promote effective and discriminating use of information and technology. The library collection will seek to respond to the actual and anticipated demands of the SMPA community.
In order to fulfill its mission the SMPA Library Media Center has established the following goals:
- -Guide students and staff to become effective users of information and technology to gain knowledge and to think critically.
- -Provide access to resources beyond the SMPA collection and unlimited by the constraints of library hours. Within this “virtual” library, provide students with access to a collection of curriculum-related and general resources designed to assist with research, inquiry and exploration on the Internet. Ensure that “virtual” library resources include timely encyclopedias, subject-specific databases, full-text e-books and audio books.
- -Maintain a dynamic, evolving collection in the library that supports the curriculum and provides a variety of books and resources to meet the needs and interest of students.
- Provide resources that support curricular goals of assisting students to draw conclusions, make informed decisions, and apply new knowledge.
- -Collaborate with teachers as instructional partners. Keep abreast of evolving student and staff needs by seeking information concerning new curriculum development and administrative decisions.
- -Maintain a well-organized collection to aid students in locating books that will be of interest to them while supporting learning.
- -Ensure that diversity and a multi-cultural balance in the collection are valued.
- -Collaborate with local public libraries/librarians to capitalize on their expertise and knowledge and promote broader student access to books.
- -Provide SMPA students with sufficient materials that will promote religious and spiritual growth and development.
- -Ensure that policies, structures, services and resources support the vision, beliefs, mission and goals of SMPA.
